77-year-old Colin Burgess, the drummer for AC/DC

The legendary Australian rock group AC/DC is in sorrow following the passing of founding drummer Colin Burgess, who contributed to the sound of the group.

The legendary Australian rock group AC/DC revealed the death of original drummer Colin Burgess, who was 77 years old.

The group honored Burgess as their original sticksman and “very respected musician” in a touching Facebook message, even though the reason of death was not revealed.

“I’m sorry to learn about Colin Burgess’s demise. He was a highly esteemed musician and our first drummer. Colin, rock in peace and happy memories,” the band stated.

Along with brothers Angus and Malcolm Young, Burgess was a member of the original lineup that helped create AC/DC’s distinctive hard-driving sound in the 1970s.

While changing its lineup throughout the years, AC/DC never lost sight of their blues-infused rock aesthetic. For a brief while, Burgess came back to cover drums when future official sticksman Phil Rudd became hurt.

He was removed in 1974 because it was said that he was intoxicated on stage, but his contribution to the band’s early compositions cannot be understated. With hits like Highway to Hell, AC/DC went on to sell millions of albums all across the world.

Commenters expressed their sorrow at Burgess’ passing, recalling him as one of the Australian musicians from the age that shaped the nation’s music landscape and continues to have an impact on the world music scene.

I adore Australian rock music in particular, so this is very sad news. I’m sorry for his family and friends; he was a member of the great musicians that launched the Australian music business,” a Facebook user commented.
