Oscar Announces Shortlists for 10 Different Categories

Voting on nominations takes place from January 11–16.

For the 96th Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed the shortlists in ten categories on Thursday.

The following categories’ shortlists were revealed: foreign feature film, makeup and hairstyling, documentary feature film, and documentary short film. Sound and visual effects; original music (score); original song; animated short film; live-action short film.

Voting for nominations is open from January 11 to January 16, with the formal announcement of nominees scheduled for January 23.

ABC will broadcast live coverage of the Oscars event, which takes place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting again.

SPORTY DOCUMENTARY FILM

In the 96th Academy Awards, fifteen films will move on to the Documentary Feature Film category. In this category, 137 films met the eligibility requirements. To choose the nominees and the shortlist, members of the Documentary Branch cast votes.

The movies, arranged by title and alphabetically, are:

SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILM

In the 96th Academy Awards’ Documentary Short Film category, fifteen films will move forward. In the category, 114 films met the qualifying requirements. To choose the nominees and the shortlist, members of the Documentary Branch cast votes.

All branches of the Academy were invited to vote in the preliminary round, and in order to cast a ballot in the category, a viewer had to fulfill a minimum viewing criterion.

All branches of the Academy are asked to participate in the nominations stage, and in order to cast a ballot, candidates must see each of the 15 selected films.

MUSIC AND HAIR DESIGN

In the Makeup and Hairstyling category of the 96th Academy Awards, ten films will progress. On Sunday, January 14, 2024, all members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch are invited to watch clips from each of the shortlisted films and hear interviews with the artists. Five films will be nominated by branch members through a vote for final Oscar® consideration.

The movies, arranged by title and alphabetically, are:

In the Original Score category of the 96th Academy Awards, fifteen scores will progress. In this area, one hundred forty-eight scores were acceptable. To choose the nominees and shortlist, members of the Music Branch cast votes.

This category will see fifteen films advance. A total of 177 movies met the qualifying requirements for the category. Members of the Academy, spanning all branches, were asked to take part in the first round of voting. To be eligible to vote in the category, a minimum viewing criterion had to be fulfilled.

Members of the Academy from all branches are asked to participate in the nominations stage; in order to cast a vote, one must see each of the 15 selected films.

This category will see ten films advance. The nominations and shortlist are decided by a vote among all eligible Sound Branch members. On Thursday, January 11, 2024, in the San Francisco Bay region, Academy members will be invited to watch trailers for each of the shortlisted films. This will be followed by screenings in London, Los Angeles, and New York. Voting by branch members will determine which five movies get ultimate Oscar consideration.

On Saturday, January 13, 2024, all Visual Effects Branch employees are welcome to watch clips and artist interviews from each of the shortlisted films. Voting by branch members will determine which five movies get ultimate Oscar consideration.
